Sacrifice
Book and Lyrics by Kenneth Clarke Music by Richard Daniels & Mark Troop
Directed for the stage by Bobby Garcia

For the very first time, a Chinese musical has been developed at the
highest levels by a collaboration of international creatives, using an
authentic Chinese story for international audiences.

Sacrifice is the extraordinary story of China’s greatest Emperor
who, after 30 years of illustrious rule, steals the beautiful wife of his
son. The Emperor, the Lady and the Prince play out their dramatic love
triangle against the background of a violent rebellion. As the prosperous
Tang dynasty is pushed to the brink of destruction, the Prince races against
all the odds to save the Empire and rescue the woman he loves. This is
China's greatest love story - and ultimate Sacrifice.

Development work includes the creation of a UK team including author,
composer and arranger, collaborating in the development of musicals scripts
and screenplays; several years of historical research in both UK and China
on the storylines; obtaining professional assessments for commercial
viability in the film and musical fields, branding the projects name, logo
and creation of supporting merchandise; creation and ongoing development of
new media strategy including website, facebook, twitter etc…; various
meetings, film festivals in both China, throughout Asia and the UK;
execution of worldwide options agreement; various musical studio recording
sessions to produce ongoing demos as development of the project evolved;
meetings in Beijing with State Administration of Radio, Film and TV, and
with China Film Co-Production Corporation resulting in production agreement;
engaging world class musical director and integrating him into the
development process; execution of various letters of intent; detailed
development of show breakdown, budgeting, character development; obtaining
financing and distribution commitments for the motion picture version;
working with co-producers on business development of the project and
exploitation planning.
The
production will capitalize at around £4m (including a contingency and
reserve) and once budgeted, with no overcall. The production will have
fixed weekly running costs of approx £200k (excluding royalties). This is
very reasonable for a large-scale West End musical (26 performers on stage
and 13 in the band).
It is estimated that at 90% of weekly box office capacity, will recoup in
22 weeks and at 70% of weekly box office capacity, will recoup in 35 weeks
always provided that none of the Reserve is spent.
The Producers have ensured the production is cost effective whilst still
retaining the ‘wow’ factor.

Prior to recoupment of Pre-Production Expenses, 100% of the Net Receipts
will be applied in repayment of the investments made by the investors
subject to meeting the Fixed Weekly Running Costs, customary prepayments
thereof, the share of Weekly Operating Profit due to Royalty Participants
and to the Producers’ right to retain by way of reserve a sum equal to not
more than two weeks’ Fixed Weekly Running Costs (the “Reserve”).
Subject
to the investments having been repaid in full, and subject to the Reserve,
the weekly surplus (“Weekly Operating Profit”) is determined by deducting
from NWBOR the Fixed Weekly Running Costs (these will have increased post
recoupment as illustrated in the attached post recoupment schedule). From
the Weekly Operating Profit (WOP) there is first deducted the share of WOP
due to the Royalty Pool, which is then shared amongst the royalty
participants.
The balance thereafter constitutes the “Net Profit” (which will vary as
the share of Weekly Operating Profits to the Royalty Pool increases at 110%
recoupment). Following Recoupment of Pre-Production Expenses the Producers
are entitled to receive in first place 5% of the Net Profit, rising to 7.5%
at 125% recoupment, to 10% at 175% recoupment and to 12.5% at 200%
recoupment. After deducting this entitlement, the remaining Net Profit will
then be shared sixty percent (60%) among the investors (including the
Producers to the extent they are investors to the Pre-Production Expenses)
and forty percent (40%) to the Producers.
