Toby Simkin is an experienced Producer with a proven track record in
production of commercial theatre and creative success
internationally in the field of first class live entertainment (stage, film,
concerts and events).
With over
25 years of 1st-class worldwide theatrical expertise, he has produced
and managed international and local productions on all scales with or
without financial involvement.

Toby is largely focused on import and export of shows between Asia
and the rest of the world. As a
leader in entertainment production, he believes in leading by example,
producing high quality, first-class projects.
Offering a combination of consulting
services, Toby Simkin has proven expertise in (and offers) the following:

- China/Asia relations and cultural consulting
Making sense out of the China/Asia marketplace for
foreign shows wanting to tour the market, includes consulting on HOW to
come into the market, HOW to tour, HOW to get paid, HOW to succeed.

Structuring and routing tours
Contiguous touring, not possible, or is it? With
careful advance planning and a lot of liaison, yes, it’s possible to
route shows to minimize or eliminate lay-off weeks, and reduce or
eliminate travel/per diem costs to Producers.

Contract and Technical Rider elements
Asia is a region of bureaucracy, particularly China.
If it's not detailed in the chopped contract, it will not be happening. First-hand
experience and years of refinements provide major insight into contract
writing.

Budgeting
You will be surprised by the rather large number of
areas of expense that generally are not predicted without first-hand
knowledge of the uniqueness of the Asian marketplace. There are ways to
circumvent, eliminate or defer these costs.

Production
Imperial to Metric, English to Chinese, 1,700 seat
theatre to 10,000 seat theatre, 20 skilled crew to 100 unskilled crew, high narrow
proscenium to low wide proscenium, these are all common elements of
differences in Production of touring shows. Lack of power, unique
instrumentation, unique regulations regarding trucking, etc.. etc... A show that tours in
American or Europe needs changes for Asia.

Management services
Without understanding the nuance and in some case polar
opposite way of thinking in Asia to that of overseas will wreak havoc on
shows. A general manager on Broadway cannot manage an Asian tour.

Engaging localized touring staff & translation
Many years and many, many tours have provided a pool
of trained, skilled local crew that are able to tour with foreign shows,
and understand 1st class touring needs.

Sourcing
Many big and small ticket items ranging from
lighting, sound, scenery, props, wardrobe, effects, office supplies,
packing materials, merchandise etc.. can be easily acquired in China,
reducing freight costs and customs issues.

Accounting
Much of Asia, and all of China is still largely a
cash society. Operating in this region means having access to large
amounts of cash, and accounting for it accordingly. Understanding when
and where you need cash (and obtaining it) is critical.

Merchandising
Merchandise sales are an important and highly
profitable revenue stream within Asia, if done right. Manufacture
locally and cheaply, sell high, and export overages back for sale
overseas at even bigger profits.

Marketing
Controlling your brand, and consolidating your
marketing is much harder than you think in Asia, where intellectual
property is largely a new concept, and marketing/advertising is handled
so differently from America or Europe.

Travel and Accommodations
Did you know that buying airline tickets and booking
hotels from within Asia is substantially cheaper, with a wider selection
of airlines, flights and hotels that online systems and overseas travel
agents cannot access?

Show development Live entertainment, particularly musicals, are exceedingly expensive, and
therefore, must be developed with the right commercial goals in mind to
appeal to a worldwide marketplace. Gone are the days of developing a
show for Broadway or the West End. Now, it's all about developing a brand and
achieving worldwide interest for consumers to WANT to buy tickets.
- Investment proposal writing
Finding the money cannot be started without first
having the proper documentation prepared, utilizing industry norms and
investment codes of practice.
- Engaging (or disengaging) creative teams
Finding the right creative personnel (Directors,
Designers, Composers, Authors, etc..), to maximize the quality of the
entertainment, and to minimize producer frustrations and cost overruns
is a critical early stage goal.

Budgeting Understand investment goals, and tailoring budgets to
suit a particular style or scale of show is critical when developing
news works. Covering all bases without underestimating likely areas of
expense is critical.
- Casting
Identifying and engaging the RIGHT
cast with the RIGHT touring company personalities for a project.
- Production
Creating the physical production from a concept
(often napkin drawings) to final product is a daunting undertaking. Toby
has over 150 shows of experience.
